A NEW mother and toddler group in Salendine Nook is going from strength to strength.
The Mums and Chums group, based at Huddersfield YMCA, was only started just over a month ago.
But numbers attending have already increased to 20 and founder Samantha Kitson is thrilled with the response.
She said: "It has really picked up and it’s all through advertising on Facebook.
"I’m offering activities that are a bit different and I’ve had some fabulous reviews – mums have commented how welcome we’ve made them feel."
Samantha found out that there was available space for meetings at the Laund Hill centre through her uncle who is on the YMCA board.
She felt that there were few similar facilities available for parents in the area and set about fundraising to get the group started.
A ladies’ night alone raised £300 and helped fund a variety of toys for the group.
The mum-of-one, who lives near Greenhead Park, felt it was important to offer mums attending the group with their little ones something extra.
Recent activities have included a Pyjama Drama session during the half-term break, involving singing and dancing.
The group has also enjoyed visits from a baby massage therapist, a weight loss consultant for mums eager to lose weight gained during their pregnancy and a beautician.
Samantha said: "Mums are so busy and they never have the time for things like this.
"When the beautician comes and does pampering sessions the mums can relax and have a manicure while watching their children at the same time.
"It’s a huge room and we’ve got lots of toys for every age."
Samantha, whose 16-month-old Elijah attends the group with her, said that anyone interested in joining can just turn up.
The group meets every Tuesday from 1pm and is aimed at mums with children aged from birth to five.
Each session costs £2 plus 50p for each additional child and includes refreshments.
