Tower in lights
LINDLEY’S Clock tower recently attracted much attention, but for the wrong reason – Kirklees Council’s failure to present the correct time, not Moscow time.
The council could redeem itself by floodlighting this attractive and iconic building, rather than spending thousands every year on too many planters around the base of the tower and across the street on Sainsbury’s corner.
None of these can be seen at night, so why not spend part of the ‘streetscene’ budget on floodlighting the Tower itself ?
In the long term, the now council-owned Field Head House, former home of the clock tower’s sponsor, Acre Mill owner J N Sykes, could perhaps make way for new sheltered housing to rent for elderly people.
Some of these families may even have helped the Sykes family make their fortune, a fortune generously bequeathed in part for Lindley, in the form of the recreation ground, library and land for today’s Huddersfield Royal infirmary.
