IT is with great sadness that the Examiner reports on RSPCA figures showing a record number of pets are being dumped by their owners.

Although some will be rehomed, you cannot help but feel great sadness that there will not be a happy ending to the story for many of those animals.

Despite all the advertising campaigns advising the public of the responsibilities that go with pet ownership, it seems too many people go into acquiring animals on a whim, without any real thought as to the long-term commitment that is required.

For a supposed nation of animal lovers, we still have an awfully long way to go in terms of learning to treat our pets responsibly.
