Entries came up roses at the Slaithwaite flower and vegetable show, which celebrated its 107th event in the village.

A total of 45 people took part in the inaugural contest on August 30, to vie for top prizes across more than 100 categories.

Barbara Smith was one of the day’s biggest winners, scooping a total of seven sponsored prizes amongst many others for her vegetable exhibitions, which included her enviable marrows, dahlias and potatoes.

Eric Weaving and David Whitwam also made other competitiors green with envy, with their larger than life offerings.

Secretary, Linda Sykes, said: “This year the number of exhibitors were down from 51 to 45 and the number of entries down from 339 to 276.

“But taking all things into consideration it was a good show and well attended in the evening.

“The Slaithwaite Women’s Institute provided the refreshments and a raffle and an auction were held - the proceeds of which go towards the cost of staging the show, the prize money and engraving the trophies.”
