THE gloves are coming off in the battle for rural supermarket supremacy in Meltham and Holmfirth.
Morrisons has now revealed plans for a far bigger site at its current Meltham store at the same time that Tesco wants to build a store in Holmfirth in a move that has sparked controversy in the Holme Valley. The pressure group Keep Holmfirth Special says Tesco will kill local trade, yet that doesn’t seem to be the case in Meltham which has had a supermarket for years.
Many will wonder if the Tesco plan has spurred Morrisons into action. Morrisons bosses cite problems with their current store such as narrow aisles, insufficient checkouts and car parking spaces and a smaller range of stock than in bigger Morrisons supermarkets.
Many shoppers have made these complaints for a while, but would Morrisons have acted without that push from Tesco?
The final result may be that Meltham and Holmfirth both end up with large supermarkets saving people from travelling wider afield for their ‘big shop.’ And the people in Meltham who are loyal Morrisons customers may have Tesco to thank for that.
