Young chefs at a Dewsbury school proved themselves a dab hand in the kitchen.

Students at Westborough High School took part in a cooking competition with an Italian twist.

Pupils were tasked with creating a new and exciting dish for the menu at Barca Cafe, an Italian cafe bar and restaurant at Redbrick Mill in Bradford Road, Batley Carr. It was all part of mock exam coursework.

A chef from the restaurant gave a cookery demonstration and helped the students research, plan and develop their menu masterpieces.

Students then made the dishes and the taste test came when George Alexander, owner of Cafe Barca, visited the school to do the judging.

George complimented each student on their efforts and gave them advice on how they could improve on their cooking.

The students who took part were: Kiran Brown, Daaniyal Butt, Rashid Rashid, Laura Gore, Charlotte Rossiter, Allyce Judge, Sidra Ashfaq, Zara Naseer, Tazim Hussain and Aliya Hussain.

The three students who came out on top were Daaniyal for his pizza, Laura for her cheesecake and Aliya for her profiteroles.

Daaniyal said: “The competition was great.

“It really helps improve your confidence.”
