SUPERMARKETS in Huddersfield are celebrating the success of a sports voucher collection scheme.

Sainsbury’s stores in Salendine Nook, Market Street and Shorehead have donated £750,000 worth of Active Kids equipment and experiences to children.

The scheme, which allows customers to collect and donate vouchers to groups of their choice, was launched in 2005.

Many local schools, nurseries and clubs are registered to take part.

One of the star collecting organisations this year was Newsome South Pre-School, where children and teachers collected an amazing 7,369 Active Kids vouchers.

Other top collectors included 43rd Huddersfield (Crosland Moor) Scouts, Golcar Providence Playgroup and 128th Huddersfield Guide Unit.

Store managers Andy Stanbridge, Mick Hepworth and Kevin Hill said in a joint statement: "Our customers have been so supportive of the scheme since its launch in 2005.

"We’re looking forward to going out over the next few weeks and seeing how this year’s equipment will benefit children, teachers and leaders."

Across the UK, more than £123m worth of Active Kids equipment and experiences have now been donated.

This year, more than 4,000 new organisations signed up to take part in the campaign.
