A TEAM GB cycling shirt has raised hundreds for a community.

Officials from Shelley Village Hall hosted an auction to boost their funds.

The auction, held at the Flying Ferret pub, pedalled up a gear when Yorkshire British Cycling Board member, Jason Metcalfe, on behalf of his firm Hanson Chartered Surveyors, donated an official Team GB cycling jersey.

The jersey had been signed by 14 Olympic and Paralympic cyclists at the Manchester Velodrome that week.

The celebrity signatures on the front of the shirt include those of Sir Chris Hoy, Laura Trott and local gold medal hero, Ed Clancy (pictured, right inset) – a former member of the Holme Valley Wheelers.

Fierce bidding for the shirt ensued with the jersey eventually going for a record £775.

The auction also featured donations from local businesses, including everything from vouchers for a Swedish massage to a goalkeeping session with ex-Town keeper Matt Glennon who lives locally.

In all the auction raised a total of £1,750 with all profits going to the purchase of the lease of Shelley Village Hall, which it is hoped will be completed shortly.

Janet Metcalfe is an active member of Shelley Community Association – and it was Janet’s son Jason, who is a member of the Yorkshire British Cycling Board, who donated the jersey.

Jason’s jersey was then left at Manchester Velodrome for as many Olympic and Paralympic riders to sign it in the week leading up to the auction.
