SPORT pupils will swap Hipperholme for a place at the London 2012 Olympics.

Hot on the heels of their own success on the track and field, Hipperholme Grammar School’s Team Hipperholme pupils will be cheering on Team GB.

The school’s athletics team have bagged themselves a few awards during the summer term – Year 11 students Paul Davis and Liam Stedman, Year 10 student Natalie Angus and Year 9 pupil Alex Snowball competed in the Calderdale Athletics Trial and qualified to represent the Calderdale area at the West Yorkshire Athletics Meeting.

The sporty students were also in excellent form for the Independent Schools North Area competition at Robin Park in Wigan.

Hipperholme Grammar School entered four teams of girls and boys in the under 13s and under 15s.

Collectively, the students achieved outstanding results with Natalie Angus winning three gold medals in 100m, 300m and long jump, all at intermediate level.

Gold was also taken by Year 10 student Paddy O’Hara, with an impressive intermediate 800m run, Grace Miller, a Year 7 pupil, in the pre-junior high jump, and Year 10’s Kane Butler in the intermediate discus.

Vicky Hellowell, head of girls PE, said: “This competition was a superb opportunity for our athletes to take part in an official meeting run to strict Athletic Association rules. It included extra events, such as the hurdles, not encountered in local meetings within Calderdale, which offered our students a broader sporting experience.”

Now 36 students will enjoy the trip of a lifetime as they travel to London to watch the men’s semi-final football match at Wembley Stadium and spend a day at the Olympic stadium for athletics and decathlon.
