THE case of the homeless man in Huddersfield (B Mac Mailbag November 12) is typical of the people who fall through the widening holes in the net of the welfare state.

Cuts in social services and mental health services mean that understaffed professionals are more occupied with cutting costs and getting rid of case loads than helping people.

The voluntary sector which assists the most vulnerable in society are facing huge cuts in funding and politicians and bureaucrats don’t give a damn about people’s lives as long as the stats match up.

This needs to be reversed now to stop the problems under the surface of society mounting and wrecking more lives.
