REGARDING the proposed new Tesco warehouse on Southgate.

Perhaps no-one has noticed that it is a massive building shoehorned on to a site that isn’t big enough (a bit like the old one really). Perhaps no-one has noticed that it has all the architectural flair and elegance of the Berlin Wall – only bigger and more brutal.

Perhaps people are happy to see the Leeds Road approach to the town centre completely dominated by a large featureless building very close to the road.

Perhaps everyone is oblivious to the rather dubious self-interest of Kirklees Council in the proposals. And I dare not even think about the parking and traffic problems it will create.

This proposal is a classic example of an all-powerful supermarket chain putting its own commercial considerations before community and particularly the environment.

At least Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys have had the good grace to build all their stores in the Huddersfield area with a bit of flair and sensitivity to the local environment. So that’s where I will be shopping.
