FOR many of us the issue of organ donation will not be something we have to think about.

In a country of around 60million people, there are 8,000 waiting for an organ transplant.

The odds are we’ll all lead healthy lives, but what about those 8,000 people? They are left waiting, in some cases for up to three years, for the chance at a life.

For them it’s a waiting game, for their loved ones it’s holding on to that glimmer of hope.

Linthwaite man Craig Wimpenny is a living example of how giving an organ can help – his life was saved by receiving a donated heart.

Discussing organ donation with loved ones will surely make a decision easier if the subject is broached by doctors after a family member’s death.

Now incentives are being suggested to those who offer their organs, including the possibility of funeral costs being met.

Surely it’s something we should all look into now, rather than let our families face making a decision. And if there are incentives which can spark that discussion, so much the better.
