AN engineering worker who began his career as a 16-year-old apprentice has retired after 48 years with Thomas Broadbent & Sons Ltd.

Scottish-born Roderick Patterson Miller, known affectionately as Jock by his workmates, was presented with a cheque from the company by joint managing director Simon Broadbent and received the proceeds of a collection taken among the workforce.

His wife Lesley was presented with flowers at a presentation ceremony at the company’s Queen Street South premises.

The couple lived at Cowcliffe until 2001 when they moved to Chesterfield, Derbyshire – since when Mr Miller has commuted to and from his job at Broadbents.

He began his career with the firm as an engineering apprentice before moving into service and spares in 1974. He has also worked as a sales engineer for the firm, which manufactures industrial centrifuges and supplies large-scale laundry equipment for sites such as hospitals, hotels and factories.

Mr Miller has three children, Helen, Rachel and James, and three granddaughters, Ella, Esme and Harriet.

His interests include gardening, walking and reading.
