OLDER people are being helped to socialise.

Jamil Akhtar helps run the drop-in sessions at the Pakistan Association on Hall Avenue in Thornton Lodge.

He believes the group has become more important in recent times.

Mr Akhtar said: “Due to Government cuts and austerity measures, people are relying increasingly on the voluntary sector and it is important that people should be informed of the services we provide.

“The sessions are free and provide an opportunity for social interaction so people do not feel isolated.

“Our centre is based in Thornton Lodge which is one of the most deprived areas in Kirklees.”

The drop-in sessions run from 11am to 3pm every Monday. Light refreshments are provided and all are welcome.
