An artist who combined an image of Dewsbury with the canals of Venice has launched an exhibition at Batley Library and Art Gallery.

David Martin, of Thornhill, painted ‘Canaletto Veduta’ based on Giovanni Canaletto’s 18th century view of the Grand Canal featuring some of Dewsbury’s most impressive buildings such as Dewsbury Town Hall, Pioneer House and Dewsbury Minster.

David held a “meet the artist” event at the gallery on Saturday (January 10) and the exhibition, featuring some 70 pieces of artwork, runs until January 31.

David is described as “an accomplished and talented artist with a classical touch.”

Much of his work depicts local scenes and themes.
