FEW would disagree that immigration policy in this country is in chaos.

While politicians wring their hands over the issue, there is continuing confusion over the exact number of illegal immigrants who have slipped through the net and carve an existence for themselves in the black economy, apparently free of any interference from the authorities.

Some may say they are stealing “our” jobs. But let’s be clear, this vast hidden army ensures that each day thousands of offices and homes are cleaned, streets are swept and drinks are served in Britain’s pubs and clubs.

They are doing dirty, poorly-paid work which we don’t want to do.

They make valuable contributions to our society while all the while living under the vast threat that they could be caught and deported at any time.

Events like the death of the Chinese cockle pickers at Morecambe Bay show how vulnerable these illegal immigrants are to exploitation.

We need an amnesty for those who are already here, who are working hard and who do not have a criminal record.

And tougher controls to stop more reaching our shores unless they have proper authorisation.
