ANYTHING that can kick-start the local retail economy has to be welcomed.

So full marks, then, to Kirklees Council for their efforts to encourage people to start up retail businesses.

They have offered rent-free stalls in Queensgate Market Hall as incentives in a novel competition.

Wannabe entrepreneurs will get the chance to run their stalls for six months free of charge and will be backed with shop fittings and signs.

It’s certainly a bold move by the council and one that can only help improve the look of Huddersfield town centre.

There are far too many empty shop units across the whole town centre, which give the whole place an air of depression.

The existing market traders are doing their bit to try and boost business and several new stalls have opened in recent weeks.

If the council’s initiative pays off and more traders get the chance to literally set out their stalls it will be money well spent. All they need then is for the public to do likewise - and spend.
