MORE dancing memories, this time from Tim Beaumont about his great uncle Stanley Atack, who owned and ran one of the popular dance halls in Huddersfield.

“He was an occasional judge on the original TV series of Come Dancing, way back in the1960s.

“I can always remember as a young boy visiting Uncle Stan and Aunty Phyllis when, on numerous occasions, ballroom dancers would be staying. I was told they were world champions for this or that but, as a five-year-old, this went straight over my head. I was more interested in Uncle Stan’s outside swimming pool. They were not many of these around Gledholt in 1967!

“I think I only ever went in once, on probably the hottest day for 10 years, and I can still remember how cold the water was.

“Tragically, my great uncle Stan was killed in a car accident in Lepton in the early 1970s. He was on his way to judge a dancing competition. He was certainly “great” to me. Always full of life: that was my great uncle Stanley Atack.”
