SO Calderdale is to undergo a Spring clean this week and today we reveal which areas are being targeted and when.

Council workers will join volunteers to clear litter and dumped rubbish, tipping it into strategically-placed skips. Owners of private land that’s a mess will also be targeted.

Well done to the council for organising it all and let’s hope a similar Spring clean can happen in Kirklees.

Of course, it shouldn’t need to be done in the first place.

People should bin their litter or take it home with them and it’s hard to understand the mentality of fly-tippers when there are so many council tips open – including at weekends.

Walk around the town centres but don’t look down as the amount of chewing gum thrown on the ground is nothing short of disgraceful.

Littering is anti-social behaviour from the smallest piece of chewing gum or cigarette stub through to dumping tyres or mattresses by the roadside.

Take a look at some other countries – especially those in Europe such as France and Germany – where people seem to take great pride in the way their towns and villages look.

What is it that makes the UK so different?
