THEY’RE the sharp-shooting basketball team with a record so impeccable they’ve become known as ‘The Invincibles’ – writes Natasha Williams.

Honley High School’s basketball picked up its latest trophy by beating Spen Valley 41-27 at the Kirklees Championships final.

The Invincibles have won every Huddersfield Schools cup and league game – over 50 matches – since the team was formed in 2008 and were crowned Kirklees and West Yorkshire Champions in 2011.

The team now includes national level players Sam Ambler, who plays for Leeds Carnegie, together with Greg Thompson and Jonathan Cacho, who have played for Bradford Dragons. And last season Sam and Greg represented Yorkshire U15.

Matt Haigh, Honley High School PE teacher, said: “The lads should be immensely proud of everything they have achieved. It’s a testament to their talent, commitment and hard work.”

Many of the team are aiming for a place at Greenhead College in September and so hope to continue playing together. Team Captain, Sam Ambler said: “We’ve enjoyed playing together at Honley High School and hope to continue our success at Greenhead.”
