IT’S certainly a mixed picture when it comes to the number of people visiting museums.

Nationally the number is down and is partially reflected in the Huddersfield area with the notable exception of the National Coal Mining Museum at the former Caphouse Colliery near Grange Moor which recorded a second huge rise in visits.

The reason is probably that it has an excitement factor with the trip deep underground.

One of the most innovative government policies in recent times was to make museums free for all which encouraged people to explore our heritage and widen their knowledge.

It made family visits possible – previously the admission charges put them out of reach for many – and meant that days out could be both fun and educational.

Where that free entry policy has changed there has been a massive impact and Red House in Gomersal has taken a huge hit in visitor numbers since it introduced charges.

Museums are there for all so let’s hope the figures are just a blip and people will throng back to them again this year.

After all, you’ll be amazed at what you can learn without even realising it.
