Youths damage school bird feeders – so police make them de-weed school grounds as punishment

This is a good punishment, it pays back, it is embarrassing and it provides a useful service to the school. These guys will not forget this in a hurry and they won't have a conviction over their heads to blight their future. Well done to the police for using some common sense

It is about time children were made to pay for the damage they have done. All too often they are given a talking to and that has no effect at all.

I am surprised and delighted to learn that the police have the power for such action and the time to implement it. In fact I am astonished. It is the best bit of news I have read in years!

I thought such offenders were either dragged before a court months after the offence or merely let off with a caution.

Slaithwaite residents rally opposition to Aldi development

Long overdue for Slaithwaite to have a decent supermarket and it could be far worse - it could be Tesco wanting to build there.

Time to catch up with the 21st century folks.

Tesco does want to build here. They have identified a site at Crimble. I'm not a fan of Tesco, but the site they've chosen won't have a significant impact on the village.

The problems with Aldi's plans are that they will fundamentally alter the character of the entire village - including a remodelling of the high street, which was itself revamped by British Waterways just a few years ago.

Aldi - fine. There's land on the industrial estate. There are old mills near the Leisure Centre. But not a development that destroys the character the village already has.
