New bottle banks in place around Huddersfield – and there’s already anger:

Government should force the manufacturers to put a deposit on their bottles and jars. Ben Shaws used to do it. Even if you can't be bothered, local kids will take them back for the 20p or whatever.

Many other countries have this. Much better to re-use than recycle.

As long as the bottle banks are sensibly located – eg at supermarkets – then for most people, what's the problem? Really?

If you travel to the supermarket to do your weekly shopping, then just take your bag or box of jars with you on the journey there. You brought them home with you in the first place, and they were heavier then.

We should be grateful we get household rubbish & general recycling collections. In many EU countries they have communal bins and recycling stations where you have to take all your rubbish yourself.

The sellers of glass contained produce will love all the different comments on comment pages like these as they take away all responsibility for the recycling of glass from where it should be ie themselves. I have mentioned this before, and I will repeat again that the real answer is for a sensible, worthwhile deposit be charged on each jar or bottle to encourage their return to whence they came in order for them to be recycled. This was done some time ago in the case of pop bottles quite successfully, until some bright spark (probably an accountant) thought of making the customer pay for the bottle and accept responsibility for its disposal or recycling. The supermarkets particularly have the wherewithal to accept this responsibility and encourage folk to return the bottles or jars. One can only dream I suppose.
