LAST January I wrote to the Examiner pleading for improved management by Kirklees Environmental Department of the Christmas and new year bin collections, especially now that the fortnightly collections are well established.

If I remember correctly, there was about three weeks between pre and post-Christmas collection of either bin, with the attendant consequences of additional bin bags left out by the grey and green bins.

Kirklees has made changes for this year according to their website. Our round (14) will now see 28 days between grey bin collections (December 17 to January 14), 26 days between green bin collections (December 10 to January 7) and 41 days between glass box collections ( December 10 to January 21).

It is clear that Kirklees cannot claim to be recycling-friendly.

They can never again take the moral high ground on the environment when they cannot manage this busy period in a way that provides a reasonable level of service to its paying customers.

I suppose their answer will be to take the surplus to the recycling centre at additional cost to the individual (time, fuel – if one has a vehicle). Maybe we can hope for a month’s council tax rebate as a reward!

I suggest other council tax payers visit the council website to see if their Christmas “service” is just as dire.
