Having had to visit the HRI on a few occasions in the last 12 months, I am in total admiration of the cleaning and nursing staff at the hospital.

On a visit to the infirmary, I had to visit the gents’ toilet in reception.

While I was washing my hands, three other men who had used the facilities left without washing their hands.

Has anyone tried to leave a lavatory without touching a door handle?

It was a big relief when someone came in, so I did not have to touch the door.

Also the men who left before me did not use the anti bacterial solution stationed around the hospital, but did touch hand rails, lift buttons and door handles.

What a disgrace. How are our hospitals supposed to keep infection to a minimum when the great unwashed public have the hygiene regimes of farm yard animals?

The hospital is clean, the staff are all in clean uniforms and some bright spark thinks that because the doctors and nurses have no watches or rings and shirts rolled up to the elbow, the hospital will be cleaner and more hygienic.

As long as they keep letting in the great unwashed public, I am afraid they are fighting a losing battle.

Keep up the good work anyway, it would be so much worse without all your good efforts.

Well done to rebel MPs

AT a time of restricting immigration and hearing of people who live in this country and yet want to fight against it, it was so nice to hear that the Ghurkha Soldiers, people who are proud to have fought for this country, have won a Parliamentary vote to have the right to live in this country.

Twenty-three Labour MPs voted against the Government these were: Dianne Abbott, Ian Cawsey, Harry Cohen, Jeremy Corbyn, Paul Farrelly, Mark Fisher, Neil Gerrard, Kate Hoey, Kelvin Hopkins, Joan Humble, Glenda Jackson, John McDonnell, Shona McIsaac, Andrew Macinlay, Gordon Marsden, Bob Marshall Andrews, Julie Morgan, Nick Palmer, Stephen Pound, Nick Rainsford, Andy Reed, Linda Riordan, Alan Simpson, Andrew Smith, Paul Truswell, Keith Vaz, Robert Wareing, Mike Wood.

I feel this was such an important vote that it is correct for those with the bottle to do the right thing to be named.

I also note that some of our local MPs towed the line so as not to rock their individual boats.

Congratulations to these Labour MPs on a strike for Parliament against this Government.

Rubbish troubles

TALKING of these supposedly ‘caring’ councillors on dealing with ‘rubbish’.

Some areas in Almondbury, for example, have had 20 or more bags of household waste and other rubbish on footpaths for many weeks.

I recently read in the news that a little girl accidentally dropped part of a sausage roll on the street and her parents were fined.

Another incident was where a chap flicked cigarette ash from his car and was fined £1,000! Have the environmental services got it right?

Time to look at this once neat and tidy area of Almondbury.

Confusing decisions

TO quote Wednesday’s Examiner, April 23, unemployment is over two million and rising.

The number of housing repossessions is also rising.

Tens of thousands, if not millions, are in negative equity and the Government still insists on going ahead to build thousands more homes to bring the prices down.

Is it just me?

Support the Gurkhas

SEEING the news yesterday, I just don’t believe that the Government was actually trying to restrict our Gurkha veterans’ rights to remain in this country – the country many of them gave their lives for.

We have goodness knows how many people walking the streets who are in this country illegally and yet we are turning these brave men away.

I think it is all wrong and hope our own armed forces and veterans support their fight to stay.

Charity begins at home

I THINK the only surefire way Chancellor Alistair in Wonderland – sorry I mean Darling – could cut spending to save the taxpayer from sinking faster than a holed ship is to cut overseas aid.

Let’s face the truth here, rich countries have been throwing billions at Africa and so on for years and their corrupt leaders are still milking the system.

All the dosh that has gone into their own pockets and their private armies could have built another country.

So cut the aid and bring it home to help our own folk before we become a third world disaster!

Wrong location

WITH regard to the proposed closure of the Tourist Information Office.

Who in their right mind would want a Tourist Information Office at the opposite end of the town from where tourists arrive?

Praise for Boothy

THANK you to gallant Leeds United fan Katrina of Meltham, re: ‘Leeds praise for Boothy' (Examiner April 28th).

It's pleasing to know that Andy Booth’s brilliant career for Town is appreciated across the footballing divide.

His ability to defend off the line, then moments later, having run the length of the pitch, score one of his trademark bullet header goals, make him a true legend.

Katrina claims there are many Leeds United fans in Huddersfield. I think that's over stating the case somewhat.

I would appeal to the half a dozen or so Leeds fans in Huddersfield to jump ship and support The Terriers.

Let's remember, we beat you twice this season, just as we will next!

Paying tribute

I WATCHED the London Marathon with a tear in my eye as I thought about Keith Bamforth, who lost his fight with cancer.

Keith did a lot in his lifetime, always helping others. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

A taxing issue

BARRY Gibson’s tirade against the “wealthy” who might have to pay 50% tax (Examiner, April 29) is only half the story.

One unexpected benefit of Nigel Lawson’s scrapping of the higher tax bands in 1986 was that those people actually paid more total tax in pounds and pence.

Alistair Darling admits that about 70% of eligible 50p taxpayers will evade paying it.

This is confirmation that this Government is fiscally worse than useless.

Incidentally, Barry can only think of one person on nearly £150,000 a year.

So who does he think is buying all the £1m houses then?

Poor show at parade

SUNDAY’S St George’s Day Parade saw nice weather for once. But no band. How disappointing.

Young people had to walk, no marching. Our young people deserved better.

Parking problems

I READ with disbelief the comments made by Martyn Attwood, director of Excel Parking about travellers camping on the Leeds Road retail park car park.

Let me get this straight, park for over 90 minutes and Joe Public gets an instant £60 fine.

Park indefinitely in a caravan and no fine will be issued because Mr Attwood insists ‘it won’t get much of a result’.

Well, my advice for anyone unfortunate enough to receive a parking fine is to file it straight into the bin. Now that’s what I would call a result!

Thank you

MAY I, through your letters page, express my gratitude to the kind and resourceful person who found my lost car keys on a footpath in the vicinity of Meltham Mills Reservoir last week.

They were suitably placed to enable me to spot them when I wearily retraced my route. My relief was huge! Thank you.
