AN abandoned fire station looks like it’s finally set for a revamp.

The former fire station at Marsden has been lying empty for exactly five years.

Firefighters left the 101-year-old Manchester Road building to move into the adjacent Emergency House premises in July 2005.

Fire chiefs then put the historic 1909 built station up for sale.

It was expected to raise a six-figure sum, but it has remained empty ever since.

But now a new plan to convert the dormant building into a cafe/wellbeing centre and flats has been unveiled.

The old stone premises would be stripped out with a cafe bar at the front of the premises and a yoga studio and a one-bed first floor apartment at the rear.

The studio and living quarters would be housed in a modern style flat roofed two-storey extension which would be constructed from an eco-friendly timber frame with wood cladding.

Two separate three-bed houses are also planned for space behind the site.

The dwellings had already been given the green light by Kirklees Council in 2007, but the permission has lapsed.

Eight car parking spaces are planned for the development.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue confirmed they still owned the property and were currently in negotiations with an interested party.
