HUNDREDS of children battled it out to be named top athlete in this year’s Schools Cross Country Championships.

Over 400 children took part in the event, held as part of Kirklees Youth Games, at Leeds Road Sports Complex.

The day featured four races, with runners competing for individual honours and team prizes in each.

The cream of talent from across Kirklees was represented, after runners qualified through heats held by the four School Sports Partnerships.

Andy Cook, Kirklees sports development officer, helped organise the event and praised the standard of the runners.

He said: “There have been four fantastic races and all the winners had to perform very well to gain their victories.

“I am sure that everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed the day. Hopefully, many will go on to join a local athletics club.”

Winners included Rowley Lane School, which took home the team prize for Year 3/4 girls and individual prize for Gabriella Piccioni.

In the Year 3/4 boys race, Ryan Hammerton of St Patricks, Birstall, won while Rowley Lane won the team event.

The Year 5/6 girls final was won by Dalton School’s Charlotte Jervis.

Scissett Middle School scooped the team prize as well as the group honours for the Year 5/6 boys prize, led by individual honours winner Max Mallinson.
