A HUDDERSFIELD filmmaker is set to go into production with his directing debut.

Bal Kumar, from Lockwood, hopes to start shooting emotional drama Love Blurs Boundaries later this year.

The film follows the struggle and hardship of two characters from different cultures as they fight to stay together despite other people’s racism and prejudice.

It has already been compared to Brit flicks Bend It Like Beckham and East Is East, with both humour and drama in equal measure.

The cast list includes Waking The Dead’s Wil Johnson, star of Dead Man’s Shoes Stuart Wolfenden and newcomer Gemma Nichols.

The film is the latest in a growing number of projects busy Bal has been involved with.

The 38-year-old, who started his career as a lecturer in film, last year saw the release of his debut feature film as a producer with Cuckoo, starring Richard E Grant.

His new film is set for small theatrical release in London next year, with a limited DVD release to follow by the end of the year.

The producers have already £30,000 of the film’s £50,000 budget, but still need £20,000 to go into production.

Bal has lectured in film at various colleges and would love to open up the film industry to many others.

It is considered difficult to get into the industry.

But he has always had tremendous support from his Indian-born mother, brothers and sisters, with whom he lives.

Bal said: “I’m very excited to be making my debut as a director.

“I am hoping that people from Huddersfield will get involved, either as investors or helping make the film itself.

“The benefits for investors would include getting the opportunity to be part of the film, meet the cast and crew and attend special screenings.”
