THEY worked round the clock, six days a week.

But Alan and Geraldine Chapman, who’ve retired from Meltham Liberal Club after 28 years, don’t regret one minute of their time there.

Mr and Mrs Chapman became stewards of the club in 1985. Alan had been a machinist at David Brown’s while Geraldine had been running Meltham Conservative Club.

Alan said: “I’ve done six days a week for the last 28 years but I’ve no regrets.

“I’ve enjoyed meeting everyone every day. Every day is different. You meet different people.

“I’ll miss all the banter but you’ve got to look to the future.”

The couple, who have three children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, will spend the first month of their retirement on a cruise of the Caribbean.

As with most pubs and clubs, Meltham Liberal Club has become quieter over the years but the couple have always enjoyed their time there. Mr Chapman said: “It’s been a great place to work at.”
