Sporting children got the weekend off to a good start in Elland.

The popular Elland Carnival took place with an inter-school sports competition followed by a procession through the town and a fun day at the Boxhall Playing Fields where there was a schools balloon release, a BMX stunt show, local dance groups, the Spen Valley Marching Band, National Festival Circus, plus plenty of family fun.

David McCorrie, one of the organisers, said: “It’s been a brilliant day, a tremendous atmosphere with lots of people out enjoying themselves in the sun. We’re delighted with how it’s gone, it’s been good to get people out into the community and I think everyone has really enjoyed themselves.”

The event took place on Saturday as the town get ready for the Tour de France Grand

Depart on the Sunday, which passed the edge of the town from Greetland into Blackley.
