An offensive poster has caused a row among dog owners and sparked a parish council investigation.

After free dog poo bags provided by Holme Valley Parish Council disappeared, a sign was put up.

Purporting to be from the parish council, it says: “Due to some a**ehole taking all the bags at once and spoiling it for others there will be no more bags supplied.”

It was signed “the council.”

A picture of the notice, which was taped onto a dog poo bin in the Holme Valley, was posted onto the Holmfirth Community Group Facebook page.

The member who posted the picture wrote: “I’m not sure I appreciate the tone or language of this notice, particularly as it’s from the Parish Council.

“However I can see their point. Dog walkers, myself included, should be carrying their own bags.”

But a Holme Valley Parish Council (HVPC) official was quick to confirm it was nothing to do with them.

Parish clerk Sally Barber said: “I can assure you that sign not authorised by HVPC.

“I will investigate who put it there. Such language is totally unacceptable.”

But many people agreed with the cheeky poster.

“You know what?” they said. “Good tone.”

“People are being a**eholes. Take responsibility for your own dog.

“Do you supply nappies for my baby in case one has an accident? No.”

Another said: “It is only what we are all thinking.”

Another member commented: “I like the tone... to the point and honest.”

A former Kirklees councillor said: “The point of having bags available is for those who need them in an emergency, as walking a dog without any bags could get you a fine.”

The poster has now been removed – and the dispenser refilled with bags.
