Sir Patrick Stewart talks to the Examiner
Examiner reporter Gina Colley got to chat with Sir Patrick earlier during his visit (lucky thing).
He told how the University has been “such an important” part of his life.
The actor has also told how he has sold his £500,000 Yorkshire home near Grassington and isn’t planning to buy a property in the county anytime soon due to hectic work schedules.
He said: “I have plenty of family who will put me up.”
Sir Patrick has a niece, Julie, in Mirfield and a brother who lives near Whitby. He also has a relative living in Leeds.
M62
Just an update on the M62 for you all. Reports of two lanes blocked and queueing traffic due to accident on the westbound carriage between junction 27 and junction 26 for the M606.
The congestion is to going back to junction 28 for Tingley.
See you soon, Sir Patrick
The unveiling ceremony has now finished. We look forward to his next return!
His production, No Man’s Land, is currently showing at Sheffield Lyceum Theatre.
"You think of pigeons"
It is an incredible tribute from the University to one of the town’s most famous figures.
New building and plaque
Here’s a picture of Sir Pat’s plaque and the building named in his honour:
The star has been enjoying a performance from the university’s drama students. The new building named in his honour will be aptly used for theatre studios.
Imagine having to impress the Star Trek legend and veteran Shakespearean actor as a student! Luckily, he looks like he’s enjoying the performance.
Sir Patrick arrives in town
A few pictures of Sir Patrick arriving at the campus earlier. He is pictured with Vice Chancellor Bob Cryan:
When is the unveiling?
Sir Patrick will be attending a ceremony for the unveiling of the plaque at 1.25pm. We will bring you pictures and updates of the legend as we get them!
Woman's body found in Mirfield canal
We have some breaking news coming in that a woman’s body has been found in the canal in Mirfield.
Please follow our separate blog as we bring the latest updates on this.
Our reporter Andrew is on his way to the scene. If you have Twitter, you can follow him for updates @Andrew_Examiner.
Why is Sir Patrick visiting today?
Sir Patrick is currently on tour for his new production of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land, also starring Sir Ian McKellan.
He is visiting the University today to unveil a plaque at the campus’s new building named in his honour, following his stint as Chancellor which he handed to the Duke of York.
The premises are a vast Victorian church - previously known as the Milton Building – which have been converted into spacious, well-equipped studios and theatres for all kinds of performance, teaching and research.
The University of Huddersfield has begun a process of naming all its key buildings after famous local personages. Most of them are figures from the past such as Richard Oastler and the Brontes. Sir Patrick is the exception.
“He is very much a living legend!” said University Vice-Chancellor Professor Bob Cryan, who will escort Sir Patrick at today’s event.
“He was an inspirational figure as Chancellor for so many years, and now we are ensuring that he will be an inspiration for drama students for generations to come”.
Press wait to meet Sir Patrick
Look North’s Harry Gration is also down at the University to meet the star. We’ve got a reporter going down to grab him for a quick chat later (Sir Patrick, not Harry. Although to be honest we’re equally a fan of both).
Police activity in Mirfield
We’ve received reports of police activity down by the canal at Station Road, Mirfield (behind Lidl).
A police cordon has gone up and eyewitnesses say activity is centering around a canal boat. We are in touch with police and will update you when we find out more about this.
What time is Patrick Stewart arriving?
Sir Patrick Stewart is expected in Huddersfield shortly before midday. As a treat to you all, here is a video of him talking about hardware shops.
Road closure
Traffic over Leeds way this morning. Queues on Dewsbury Road (A653) which is closed in both directions due to an accident involving a pedestrian. Police are directing the traffic. So bad news if you’re heading back this way from Leeds.
Also on junction 5 of the M621 westbound the exit slip road is blocked at junction 5 due to a broken down lorry. Basically find another route if you’re in Leeds!
