What we know so far

One house directly opposite the entrance to Huddersfield Grammar School has been very badly damaged and it’s possible the one either side to it have also been damaged.
Former Huddersfield Grammar School pupil Michael Watson, 17, said: “At 12.30pm I was on my way down from Huddersfield New College and as I got near I saw big plumes of black smoke and thought ‘that doesn’t look good.’
“I phoned 999 and went round the back to see what was happening and several of us were trying to find out if anyone was inside the house. One lad kicked in the front door to rescue a small dog.”
Huddersfield Grammar School headteacher Tim Hoyle added: “We were warned about the smoke coming across the playing fields so we took the children inside. It seems there was no-one inside the houses.”
