Three young rockers made sure a Huddersfield leavers’ do hit the right note.

A band called Maximum Voltage had youngsters dancing to their music at a school leavers’ prom.

Around 40 children, aged 10 and 11, from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Dalton attended the event.

It was organised by parent Ameeta Foster at Moldgreen Top Club, and had the added bonus of raising money for Kirkwood Hospice, Dalton.

Anya Foster, Ameeta’s daughter and one of the leavers, is lead singer for Maximum Voltage along with her 13-year-old brother Anthony on the drums and their friend Thomas Moran, also 13, playing the guitar.

The young musicians performed a few songs including St Joseph’s Dreams, written by Anya. It was about the school and was based on the Undertones song Teenage Kicks. The trio are part of Kirklees Music School and are taught by Michael Crone.

A raffle and silent auction at the prom, with prizes donated by local businesses, boosted Kirkwood Hospice’s coffers by around £800.

“I thought it would be nice to teach the children to help good causes which hopefully they will follow later in life,” said Ameeta.

Other attractions at the event included a disco, buffet with a leavers’ cake, a photo booth and fireworks display.

A memories corner showed photographs on a projector of the children from nursery to year 6. There was also a special autograph book to sign, along with a wishing tree decorated with wooden hearts for the girls and stars for the boys. The children wrote their names on the front of the decorations and their wishes for the future on the back.

Ameeta plans to hold a reunion for the youngsters in 2023 when they are all 18, and she says she will keep the tree to show them what they wrote.

Before they left the prom, each child received a personalised sixpence to bring them luck.

The children will go their separate ways in the next academic year. They will attend other schools in the Huddersfield area including King James’s in Almondbury, Kirkburton Middle School, Netherhall Learning Campus at Rawthorpe, Honley High and All Saints Catholic College, Bradley Bar.

Ameeta thanked all the businesses who donated prizes, Philip Andrade for his doorman skills and for making the children feel welcome when they arrived, and Alice Cudjoe for helping the children with the autograph book and wishing tree.
