Shocking footage has emerged of the moment a police car was sent cartwheeling through the air during a high speed chase.

Police officers Stephen Jackson and Roger Lord were fortunate to escape death when Gregory Mark Day collided with their BMW5, sending it out of control as he tried to force his way past during the 20 mile chase on the M1.

Horrified colleagues in another police car behind captured the car flipping into the air and spinning over before landing back on its wheels straddling the hard shoulder and inside lane, leaving debris littering the carriageway.

One woman can be heard screaming as the car spins through the air.

Day was jailed for 42 months earlier this week.

Recorder Charles Ekins said at Leeds Crown Court : “It is frankly a miracle the two police officers in that vehicle have suffered no lasting injury, although those they did suffer were unpleasant.”

“You drove in a fashion in which you were lucky to escape unscathed. To say it was dangerous is an understatement.”

Day, 37 of Leeds Road, Deighton , admitted criminal damage reckless whether life was endangered, dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen. He was banned from driving for three years.
