KIND-HEARTED Examiner readers have swamped the tsunami disaster appeal with offers of help.
Their fundraising efforts have doubled the amount raised in a little over 48 hours.
The money given by this newspaper's readers has now reached £11,725 - and more is on the way.
Donations are still pouring into the appeal centre set up by Unicef.
And many Huddersfield people are planning more fundraising events in the coming days and weeks.
Louis Coles, regional fundaising manager for Unicef, said: "I am delighted to inform you that the Huddersfield Examiner/Unicef Asia Earthquake Children's Emergency Appeal has so far raised a wonderful £11,725.00.
"That can provide a clean, safe drink of water for 2,814,000 people, and 50p is enough to buy water purification tablets to give 120 children a litre of clean, safe water to drink."
The Huddersfield donations have been arriving at a collection centre in Essex.
And "It's mayhem!" was the cry from staff at Unicef's national processing centre in Billericay as Unicef reported that it has never before received donations to an emergency appeal in such unprecedented numbers.
Mr Coles said: "Staffing levels and working hours have been increased in an attempt to meet the demand.
"But even with extra numbers and a team of volunteers, we cannot open and process the donations quickly enough.
"The response from the public has been simply amazing. We can't thank our donors enough.
"It's great to be in a position to have too many donations to open!
"Every donation counts and we will be working round the clock to ensure that every one is processed as quickly as possible so that the money can be sent immediately."
