A MULTI-MILLION pound scheme to improve leisure centres in Kirklees has been given the go-ahead.
Yesterday, members of Kirklees Council’s Cabinet approved capital funding for the a programme of repairs to swimming pools and sports centres across the borough.
A total of £11.38million will be spent over the next five years on improving facilities, and major projects already planned include Holmfirth Pool, Batley Sports and Tennis Centre and Colne Valley Leisure Centre.
Over the next year, centres will receive £1.54million for improvements. Holmfirth Pool will be given £950,000 – the largest cash injection of all the leisure centres– for its major improvement programme.
The pool was earmarked for the cash after a Sports and Leisure Centres report commissioned last June found it to be in urgent need of repairs and maintenance work.
The building was described as being in a dilapidated condition, and a number of issues needed to be addressed to make it fit for use, including health and safety.
The number of changes needed include major upgrades to the ventilation and electrical systems and repairs to pool tiles.
The report also described the pool’s filtration system as inadequate, and described the drainage to the wet areas as “defective”.
For better access to the building for the public, a number of changes will also be made, including a new main entrance door and other doors leading to the facilities, an accessible reception, and unisex disabled changing and showering facilities.
Two extensions will be added to the centre. A front extension will house a reception area, office, and consultation room for clients on the GP referral leisure scheme. The second extension on the side of the building will be a store for pool equipment.
The improvement project, which is expected to take 18 weeks to complete, will start in November.
Other facilities to benefit over the next year from the council’s capital budget include Huddersfield Sports Centre, which will receive £100,000 for improvements in several areas, including health and safety and improving customer satisfaction.
