MORE than £16,000 has been awarded to arts organisations in Kirklees in the second round of a grants scheme.

The Arts in the Neighbourhood scheme is run by Kirklees Council's cultural and leisure services.

Huddersfield African Sports and Cultural Club has won £1,300 to pilot six-monthly cultural evenings at the Hudawi Cultural centre.

The project aims to unite African refugee settlers in Huddersfield.

If the pilots are successful, then a regular monthly celebration of African culture could be held.

Huddersfield Jazz gets £1,000 for its programme of events.

The 5th Kirklees National Guitar Orchestra Competition, taking place in Batley on Nov- ember 27, gets £500.

The Arts in the Neighbourhood scheme supports projects with grants of between £150 and £2,000.

Closing date for the next round will be February 28 next year.
