SEVENTEEN firefighters tackled a grass fire in Quarmby for more than three hours to bring it under control.

The blaze broke out at around 4pm on Saturday in Quarmby Road and crews from Huddersfield and Holmfirth were sent to deal with it.

The seat of the fire had spread to a number of pine trees and was around 10,000sq ft at one point.

Huddersfield Watch commander Andy Dickinson said: “The blaze was deep-rooted and we were forced to dig up the peaty soil in places and give it a good wetting.

“No houses had to be evacuated and horses in another field were unaffected.

“We don't know the cause of the blaze. It could have been a number of things – a cigarette or we found a bottle which could have acted like a mirror.”

The incident was dealt with by 7pm.
