ROMEOS are desperately needed to take part in a speed-dating event in Brighouse on Friday.

Organisers fear the night at the Holiday Inn hotel will have to be cancelled because only three men have so far applied for the £25 tickets. And that would mean letting down the 20 women who have applied.

Speed-dating originated in the USA and is now all the rage in cities like London and Leeds. But men in Brighouse are a little more reserved.

Joanne Thomas, from event planning company Pink Rose Occasion, Bradford, said: "If we don't get 17 guys in it's going to collapse and I don't want to let these ladies down."

She urged men not to be shy. Each gets to spend three minutes chatting with every woman. Those they like are then ticked on a card.

At the end of the evening, if a man and woman have a corresponding "tick" they may see romance blossom.

"The atmosphere in a room with a speed-dating evening is absolutely brilliant," said Joanne. "This way when you come into that room you know everybody is in the same boat."

The ages of the ladies going on Friday night vary from 21 to 55.

Joanne added: "Nobody's going to ask people to marry them there and then. It's just a social event with a theme."

The event begins at 7.30pm.
