A MAN who punched his victim in the face – breaking his jaw in two places – has been jailed for 18 months.

Sattar Mohammed, 25, of Back Lane, Heckmondwike, appeared at Leeds Crown Court yesterday for sentence after pleading guilty to causing guilty grievous bodily harm to Atir Nazwar.

Prosecutor Richard Davies told the court the incident was an ‘unprovoked attack’ in the early evening of April 30 last year when Mohammed was drinking vodka in an alleyway with a group of men.

He said: “Mr Nazwar stayed with the group and initially they were quite friendly with him. He said he was going to get something to eat after 10 minutes. One of the other complainants said he could not go anywhere because he had been ‘cheeky to him’.”

Mr Davies said it was Mohammed who then punched Mr Nazwar in the face causing him to fall to the floor and start bleeding heavily.

The court heard Mr Nazwar went home and later went to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield and underwent surgery to insert a metal plate and two screws to secure his jaw. He spent three days in hospital.

Defending Mohammed, Simon Perkins told the court his client had issues with alcohol but was in employment.

Judge Guy Kearl QC told Mohammed: “It was an unprovoked attack. Mr Nazwar fell to the floor. When he came round he found he had blood pouring from his mouth.”

He said the case was aggravated by the fact he was intoxicated at the time and his previous convictions which included robbery and assault.

He sentenced Mohammed to 18 months in jail.
