RAIL passengers in Calderdale have been given a £1m boost.

Northern Rail have completed a major revamp of car parks at two stations.

It is part of a major programme to persuade more people in the region to leave their cars and to use public transport.

The improvement work has been carried out at Sowerby Bridge and Todmorden stations.

It has meant both have received additional parking spaces in projects worth £400,000 and £560,000 respectively.

The stations, managed by Northern Rail, have received the additional spaces through the Stations Car Park Fund, run by the Department for Transport and in partnership with Metro (West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive).

At Sowerby Bridge there are now 37 additional spaces and a total of 115 to the station overall.

Todmorden’s parking facilities have increased by 18 spaces, bringing a total of 86 to the station.

Richard Allan, Area Director of Northern Rail, said: “These improvements bring welcome additional opportunities for our customers to park at two of our popular stations in Calderdale.

“We have worked hard with our industry partners to bring benefits such as these to our passengers and are delighted to see them come to fruition.”

Metro chairman Clr James Lewis said: “Providing additional car parking will help encourage people to try the train instead of driving, helping to reduce congestion on local roads in line with the aspirations of the West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan.”

Northern Rail is the biggest train operator in Britain, providing 2,500 local and regional train services every day across the north of England, serving a population of nearly 15m.

Their services carry 94 million passengers a year.
