COUNCILLORS have welcomed plans for a new library and information centre.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet has decided to spend £1m on the Harpe Inge site in Dalton.

The derelict shops and flats there have been used by drug dealers.

Cabinet members at first wanted to put the library at the Dram Centre on Ridgeway, Rawthorpe, but changed their minds after lobbying by Dalton ward Labour councillors.

Clr Angela Ellam welcomed the decision, saying: “This is a major opportunity to regenerate the most deprived part of Dalton ward.

“The site needs to be tackled as a matter of urgency as it is an eyesore which sends negative signals to the community.

“Developing a joint library, information and children’s centre will make the area more inviting.’’

Clr Peter McBride said: “This is an ideal way to reverse the area’s decline.”
