POLICE seized 200 cannabis plants in an early-morning raid on a Newsome home.

The terraced house on Tunnacliffe Road was raided after a tip-off.

Police say the plants could have been worth as much as £60,000 to those growing them.

No-one has yet been arrested in connection with the find.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "We were made aware of the cannabis during the early hours and police went round and recovered 200 cannabis plants and some hydroponic equipment, which is used to grow the plants.

"They were all taken away by the Neighbourhood Policing Team and inquiries are ongoing.

"No arrests have yet been made and we’d ask anyone with information to contact us."

Yesterday the Newsome house where the plants were discovered was shut up.

Residents of nearby Newsome Road said they were shocked by the find.

One man, Ian Stewart, 47, said: "I saw the police around here two days ago but they didn’t stay long.

"There were patrol cars driving round this morning too so at least they’re on top of it but I don’t know who lives there."

The find adds to the growing number of farms police have discovered in Huddersfield so far year.

They have uncovered marijuana factories at an average rate of 15 every two months since the start of 2009.

If the trend continues, police will have found 90 by the end of the year – 30 more than were discovered in 2008.

Last week police found 80 plants worth about £24,000 at a property in Fartown.

In August they discovered 300 plants worth £100,000 in Longwood.

Anyone with information about the Newsome cannabis farm, or who wants to report a suspected cannabis factory, is asked to contact police on 0845 6060606 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
