COUNCIL tax payers are going to have foot a £2,000 bill for a three-night stay by travellers.

A group of caravans left the cricket pitches at Leeds Road overnight where they had set up camp earlier this week.

It is estimated that the whole operation to kick them off and then clean up will run to £2,000.

The money, which is equivalent to the annual council tax of two-and- a-half homes, was used to secure a court order to force the travellers to leave.

It will also be used to clean up the waste - which includes deposits of human faeces, nappies and rubble.

Clr Martyn Bolt, who visited the scene on Wednesday morning, said: "It is sickening."

The cabinet member for highways and environment said: "Two drain covers have gone missing and those drains are stuffed with nappies, human waste and who knows what else.

"There are bits of cars in the bushes and piles of rubble around the site.

"There is a health issue with how this place has been left.

"We will have to try and make sure it is safe so cricket matches can be held here this weekend."
