SUPERMARKET company Asda is creating 2,000 jobs - to cut weekend queues at the checkouts.

Asda, which has a store at Bradford Road in Huddersfield, said the new recruits would ensure that every one of its 7,000 checkouts at all 270 UK stores would be open from 10am to 6pm on Saturdays and throughout the six hours of trading permitted by law on Sundays.

The Leeds-based company, which has 130,000 employees, said surveys showed that shoppers were unhappy with lengthy queues at the checkouts.

John Irwin, director of customer service, said: "We want to help customers get in, get round and get out as quickly as possible

"Almost one third of our customers shop exclusively at the weekends and we think this scheme will make a real difference."
