SOME 2,000 people gathered in Kirklees to celebrate a major anniversary.

They were at the Dewsbury Rams Stadium to mark the UK’s biggest birthday bash of the year – the launch of Girlguiding UK’s Centenary celebrations.

The action-packed event was one of hundreds that took place at the same time throughout the UK to mark the first 100 years of guiding.

Over 2,000 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section and Adult volunteers from Girlguiding West Yorkshire South gathered at the stadium for an evening of singing and celebrating and a special performance of Herbert’s Dream by France-based company Quidams.

The event wasn’t just open to current members. County officials wanted to get anyone who had ever made their promise as a member of the organisation involved and hope that some of them will decide to come back into Guiding.

That meant Huddersfield’s Dartmouth and Ramsden Divisions arrived in over 12 coach loads.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Julie Stewart-Turner, was among the guests.

Dartmouth’s Division Commissioner Kathryn Haigh said: “The girls were able to get involved and move round with the performers, the lights in the costumes at dusk was very effective”.
