TWO estates have gained a £200,000 boost to help cut anti-social behaviour.

The Big Lottery fund has made the donation to a group which works on two estates in the Batley and Birstall areas.

Through the Fusion Project, Wilton estate in Batley and Fieldhead estate in Birstall will see long-term work with young people with the aim of creating a positive effect in both areas.

The Kirklees Integrated Youth Support Services (IYSS) has been successful in securing the money, aimed at encouraging pro-social behaviour, reducing crime and getting young people involved in positive projects.

Clr Peter O’Neill, Cabinet member for children and families at Kirklees Council, said: “The Big Lottery grant allows us to extend our current work for another five years with young people living in Batley and Birstall.

“This is an exciting opportunity for young people to broaden their horizons, achieve something new and set an example to future generations.

“Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and other stakeholders will provide additional funding of £45,500 to help maximise the impact of the work.”

Part of the money will be used to encourage residents to volunteer their time to improve the estates.

Clr Shabir Pandor, Chair of the Wilton Neighbourhood Project Board, said: “This really is excellent news for the Wilton estate.

“The grant will allow us to fund a youth worker and this initiative will have a major impact in addressing the issues in Wilton”.
