A FIERCE blaze swept through 24 cars at a scrapyard early today.

The flames were spotted at Cooper Bridge Spares just after 3am.

Crews from Brighouse, Huddersfield, Mirfield and Dewsbury were sent to tackle the inferno.

The fire is thought to have been started deliberately.

A fire service spokesman said: "The value of the damage will be quite high as this compound was used to store vehicles which had been damaged in accidents or had been stolen and then recovered.

"The cars were parked very close to one another and the fire swept from one to another.

"Many still had petrol and oil in them."

Crews were at the scene for two hours.
