A COURT battle over a 10p parking ticket has cost the taxpayer £2,500.
Former Marine Nick Newby, of Mirfield, was slapped with a £30 fine - which rose to £50 when he refused to pay - in February.
He parked in Mirfield Library car park and seeing no pay and display sign assumed it was free.
But yesterday the 45- year-old was told by District Judge Jonathan Bennett at Dewsbury Magistrates' Court he had wasted taxpayers money.
He told the court Kirklees Council were in a "no win situation" as they would be criticised whether they pursued or dropped the case.
The judge said:
"Sadly local taxpayers end up paying for the most of this as I cannot order all the costs against Mr Newby because he is on benefit."
Newby, of Knowles Lane, Gomersal, was fined £50 and ordered to pay £250 towards the costs which could rise to as much as £5,000.
